Opae Ula, or Hawaiian Red Prawns, are truly fascinating creatures! These tiny shrimp, usually only about 1–1.5 cm in size, are small but full of life. I’ve set up four tanks of various sizes, each home to over 50 shrimps, and they’ve been thriving for over 8 months now. These tiny ecosystems are not only mesmerizing to watch but also a rewarding way to connect with nature.
Setting up the tanks is a careful process. Opae Ula require brackish water, which involves mixing distilled water and marine salt to achieve the right salinity and pH levels. I get my distilled water from NTUC, and buying it in cartons helps save a bit of money. Getting the balance right is key to ensuring they thrive in their environment. Once the tanks are established, they require minimal maintenance—just sunlight and occasional feeding.
Despite their small size, these shrimp bring so much joy and tranquility. My dream is to one day see some berried shrimps (carrying eggs) and watch the family expand naturally. Here’s hoping they continue thriving for many more years! 🌊🐚
